Petersburg, VA – The Petersburg Generals have announced the signing of a Princeton University Tiger, Daniel Barnes, to the roster. Barnes, 6-1, 190, is a freshman right-handed pitcher from Manhasset,
NY. In high school, Barnes, was a four-year letter winner for baseball
while posting an 8-1 record as a senior, with a 0.80 ERA and 103
strikeouts in 58 innings of work.
As a
freshman at Princeton, Barnes has made seven appearances on the mound
with four starts with a 3.62 ERA, and a record of one win and two
loses. The freshman Tiger has pitched 27.1 innings with eight walks
and 27 strikeouts. Barnes was moved to the bullpen for conference play
and has two saves since being switched from a starter to reliever.
Barnes will be playing both roles for the Princeton Tigers.
Princeton
is not your typical baseball school but has produced a few good Major
League Baseball players. A few Princeton alums who have made their way
to the big show include San Diego Padres and 2007 NL All-Star pitcher
Chris Young, and rising New York Yankee pitcher Ross Ohlendorf. Coach
Scott Bradley of the Princeton Tigers has also played in MLB.
Princeton may be well known for the great academics but the Tigers have
been succeeding on the field as well as the classroom.
“The
Generals are thrilled to have this young pitcher, Daniel Barnes, as
part of our pitching staff. Barnes has a live fastball with great off
speed pitches. He is a very talented pitcher who can pitch in the
starting rotation or in relief” stated by Assistant Coach Ryan Leary.
“Barnes will see a good amount of innings on the mound this summer for
the Generals”.
The Petersburg Generals season tickets are now
for sale. The Petersburg Generals open up the season on Wednesday, May
28, at home against Peninsula Pilots. There will be 29 home games with
one of the games being an exhibition game against Catawba Valley
Stars. The 2008 season is the ninth season in the Coastal Plain
League. The Coastal Plain League is a summer wood bat collegiate
league that features teams in Virginia and the Carolinas. For more
